Poster Contest
Fifth and Sixth grade students in Jasper County are encouraged to express their thoughts about soil, water and other natural resources through art. The Jasper County Soil and Water Conservation District has sponsored the poster contest since 1984. The poster contest theme coincides with the National Association of Conservation Districts theme. The poster are judged at the April board meeting. First place winners receive $25, second place winners receive $20 and third place winners receive $15. The board also selectes 10 runner-ups which all receive $5 each. The winning posters are displaced at the Peoples State Bank in Newton, IL for a few weeks.
Trees for K-4th Grade Students - Arbor Day
Jasper County SWCD provides on average 700 tree seedlings for K-4th grade students in Jasper County in celebration of Arbor Day. Students also receive an information sheet on how to proper plant a tree and facts about the tree they received.
6th Grade Conservation Field Day
Conservation Field Day is an annual event for the County 6th graders sponsored by the Jasper County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Jasper County Cooperative Extension Service. The event is presented at Sam Parr State Park unless it is storming. The students rotate between stations such as Forestry, Rainfall Simulator, Prairie Chicken Sanctuary, Pond Ecology, Jasper Farm Bureau, Jeopardy game asking questions related to conservation. In the afternoon, they see a bird presentation from the Illinois Raptor Center.
Land Use Council 10 Envirothon
The Envirothon is an outdoor, team-based program designed to help students better understand their environment through exploration of ecology, natural resource management, and current environmental issues. The compete in five categories: Aquatics, Wildlife, Forestry, Soils and a 5th Element that changes every year. The Envirothon was first conducted in 1994. The winner per Council advances to a two day competition in Monticello. Illinois Association FFA has recently joined forces with the Illinois State Envirothon and use this event to determine the state winner that can advance the National FFA Convention. The FFA winner per Council advances to a one day competition in Monticello, IL.
Ten students and an optional two alternates from Newton Community High School compete in an Envirothon competition at the Ballard Nature Center in Effingham County. The students compete against other schools in Cumberland, Effingham, Fayette and Shelby counties.

Electronic Recycling
The SWCD tries to host a e-recycling event twice a year. The event is a community service event to help eliminate electronic waste being placed in our dumps. |
Scholarships & Grants
The Jasper County SWCD offers two types of scholarships: The Ag Education Grant is funding utilized for ag related school curriculum and individual scholarships for a senior from Newton Community High School or NCHS graduate entering or enrolled in a natural resource, conservation, environmental science, biology or an agriculture related major.
